Our Mission
We're building one of the first vocational trade schools in the U.S designed for autistic and other neurodivergent adults. This school will provide certifications in Graphic Arts, Retail, Screen Printing, Culinary Arts and other programs - creating replicable pathways to employment and empowerment.
This will be a first-of-its-kind model in California combining inclusive education, mental health informed coaching, and a real-work environment. The school site will also support Ventura residents with evening and weekend trade courses, as well as community spaces that fill gaps where there is need for the adjacent disadvantaged neighborhood.
This project is an extension of the work done at Industry Horror Inc., a Ventura based 501(c)(3) social enterprise that offers job training and employment to Autistic Adults. Through creative expression, retail experience, and real-world technical skills, our organization opens doors that are too often closed to Autistic and other neurodivergent individuals.
VUSD Surplus Property Request for Proposal
In 2022, the Ventura Unified School District underwent a process to identify properties to 'surplus' or sell-off due to declining enrollment and the cost associated with the upkeep of unneeded facilities.
The Ventura Avenue Elementary School is a school district owned property that first opened in the 1920's for children of local railway workers. It has been long under-utilized and has fallen into disrepair. The cost to repair the historic building with no intended use made it a priority for VUSD to sell off in a competitive proposal process.
Our team will rehabilitate the existing building to be the core of our new trade school and utilize the surrounding land for additional local trade and community uses.
Proposals to acquire the site are due December 4th, 2025. We wish to include your ideas and support for the project in our submission to acquire the site for the future Avenue Trade School.
